If I only have a fire extinguisher to defend myself against some threat from people, should I spray them for max damage or just hit them with the fire extinguishers?

Spray them. If it CO2 the spray comes out a minus XXX X degrees and can cause frost bite. If you want to test the result place your finger in the freezer for half a second. Have a cup of hot water on hand in case you finger gets stuck. If its Dry Chemical Powder it will fill their eyes and face with Bi Carb Soda and blind them. If they swallow it it may even smother them.
